Dog-Friendly Walks Near Market Harborough

Open parkland and deer at Bradgate Park in Leicestershire

Most of the walking around Clipston works with a dog, which is the main reason walkers pick this corner of the county over somewhere busier. The estate walks start at the door and stay on private land, so the first outing of the day needs no car and no lead-off-lead judgement call. Beyond the gate, the lanes are quiet enough that you meet more tractors than traffic.

Travelling with a dog? The Cottage is not dog-friendly, but The Loft on the same 14 Acres estate is. Same estate, same owners, same walks from the door, and dogs are welcome.

For dog walks in Leicestershire and Northamptonshire proper, the flat rail-trails are the easy wins. The Brampton Valley Way is traffic-free the whole way and has grass verges most of its length. The Foxton Locks towpath is level, short and ends at two pubs with outdoor tables. Bradgate Park is the one worth the drive for a dog that likes space, though the deer mean leads on throughout. If you are travelling with a dog, The Loft on the same 14 Acres estate is dog-friendly.

Dog-Friendly Walks At A Glance

  • The 14 Acres estate walks, straight from the door, lead on
  • Brampton Valley Way, traffic-free and flat for 14 miles
  • Foxton Locks towpath, level and short, with two pubs at the bottom
  • Bradgate Park, big open space but leads on because of the deer
  • Welland Valley Way for a longer field-and-stile walk
  • Several Clipston and Market Harborough pubs take dogs inside

Many local paths are shared by walkers and cyclists, so being aware of others helps everyone enjoy the experience. Keep to the left, stay alert, and signal clearly when passing.

Countryside etiquette to remember:

  • Be considerate to other walkers, cyclists, and residents

The Cottage is a converted Victorian dovecote on the 14 Acres estate at Clipston, built for two rather than for a group. There is one bedroom with a superking bed that can split into singles, a bathroom and a half, a well-equipped kitchen, and a private dining deck with a gas BBQ looking over rolling hills. It sleeps up to four in total, with a sofa bed in the living space, and a maximum of three adults.

For walkers the useful part is what sits outside the door. Fourteen acres of private estate walks start at the property, so a morning can go by without the car moving. Underfloor heating runs throughout and there is a utility area for wet kit, which matters more than it sounds in February. Dogs are not allowed at The Cottage, and we are unable to accommodate pets.
