Check December dates

Christmas light trails near Market Harborough have become one of the best festive evenings out in the Midlands, and 2026 brings a strong line-up within an hour’s drive of Clipston. Illuminated woodland, floodlit country houses, lantern-lit zoo paths and a drive-through lap of a Grand Prix circuit all open from late November, most of them running until the first weekend of January. For couples, a light trail makes an easy and memorable date: an hour of walking under the lights, a mulled wine by a fire pit, and dinner afterwards. At The Cottage, our romantic couples getaway in Clipston, that evening ends back in a warm, quiet cottage for two.

Each trail has its own character. Kelmarsh Hall, just five minutes from the cottage, launches Forest of Secrets, a new night-time lantern trail, while Delapré Abbey in Northampton has a brand new route for 2026 and fine dining on site. Coombe Abbey and Warwick Castle combine historic settings with large-scale light installations, while Twycross Zoo runs a lantern trail with a calmer, step-free route. Silverstone offers something different again, with two miles of the circuit lit up and viewed from your own car. Pair any of them with one of the best restaurants near Market Harborough for a romantic meal and the evening is complete.

The table brings together the confirmed 2026 dates, starting prices and approximate drive times from The Cottage for every Christmas light trail within reach of Market Harborough. All of the walking trails use timed entry slots, usually from 4.30pm, and the most popular evenings, especially Fridays, Saturdays and the week before Christmas, sell out well in advance. Booking online as soon as your stay is confirmed is the simplest way to secure the slot you want, and midweek evenings are noticeably quieter, which suits couples who want to take their time and stop for photographs along the route.

Drive times are approximate and assume clear December roads; allow extra time on Saturdays and in the final week before Christmas, when car parks at the larger venues fill quickly. Because most trails close their last entry by around 8pm, a 4.30pm or 5pm slot leaves plenty of time for dinner afterwards, while a later slot works well if you would rather eat first. Prices shown are the lowest adult or vehicle rate for 2026, with weekends and Christmas week costing more, and several venues add a small booking fee per order rather than per ticket.

Forest of Secrets Lantern Trail at Kelmarsh Hall, Near Clipston

A woodland path lined with glowing lantern posts and light globes on a winter light trail at night

Forest of Secrets at Kelmarsh Hall is the closest Christmas light trail to The Cottage, about five minutes away on the A508 between Clipston and Northampton. It is a new, immersive night-time lantern trail for 2026, running on selected evenings from 31 October 2026 to 2 January 2027, and it leads visitors through the grounds of one of Northamptonshire’s finest Palladian country houses after dark. The walk takes around 45 minutes, which makes it an easy first evening of a December stay, with no long drive before or after.

Seasonal food, warm drinks and festive treats are served on site, and entry is by timed ticket, booked in advance online, so check the Kelmarsh booking calendar for the evenings that suit your dates. Because the hall is so close, a Forest of Secrets evening fits neatly around dinner in Market Harborough or a quiet supper cooked at the cottage. Kelmarsh does not hold a Christmas market in 2026, so the lantern trail is the main festive event on the estate this year, and the smaller scale makes it a calmer alternative to the large city trails.

Winter Light Trail Northampton at Delapré Abbey

A path lined with fairy lights and illuminated tree shapes beside a country house on a Christmas light trail

The Winter Light Trail at Delapré Abbey is the closest of the large Christmas light trails to Market Harborough, about 30 minutes from The Cottage on the A508 into Northampton. It runs from Friday 27 November 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027 in the grounds of the abbey on London Road, postcode NN4 8AW, and the organisers promise a never-before-seen trail with a brand new route this year. Expect new light displays, an atmospheric soundscape and interactive installations winding through the gardens and woodland, with the restored abbey providing a historic backdrop that suits an evening walk for two.

Food and drink are a strong part of the evening. There is marshmallow toasting, a selection of independent food vendors, mulled wine, craft beer and hot chocolate, and private mini chalets that can be booked for groups of eight to ten. Entry is by timed slot, booked in advance online, and 2026 prices are due to be released with the full ticket calendar. For a quieter visit, choose a weekday slot early in the season, before the Christmas school holidays begin and the trail reaches its busiest weeks.

Delapré is also one of the best places near Clipston to turn a light trail into a proper date night. Hibiscus Fine Dining and the Orangery Café are both on the estate, and on Monday 7 and Tuesday 8 December the abbey runs a Victorian Candlelit Tour from 6pm to 7.30pm, which ends with port and cheese in the grand dining room. If you enjoy the setting, our Delapré Abbey gardens day out covers the house, walled garden and history in more detail for a daytime return visit.

Lap of Lights at Silverstone: A Drive-Through Christmas Light Show

Lap of Lights at Silverstone is the most unusual Christmas light experience near Market Harborough, and one of the most popular, with around 120,000 visitors in 2025. Rather than walking a trail, you drive two miles of the full Silverstone Grand Prix circuit in your own car, passing famous corners such as Maggotts, Becketts and Stowe, with more than 7,000 lights and a series of laser shows along the way. It runs from Friday 11 to Thursday 31 December 2026, closed on Christmas Day, with sessions from 4.30pm, and Silverstone is about 45 minutes from The Cottage via the A508 and A43.

Tickets start from £50 per car rather than per person, which makes it good value for two, and the lap itself takes about 30 minutes, so allow an hour including arrival. Booking online in advance is essential, the driver needs a valid driving licence, and motorbikes are not permitted. The circuit adds other festive activities in December, including the Ice Trak from £8.50 and a new curling experience from £33, so a couple can easily build a full evening around the visit.

Because you stay warm in the car, Lap of Lights is the best choice for a cold or wet December evening, and it is easy to combine with dinner on the way back towards Clipston. For guests coming for motorsport at other times of year, our Silverstone accommodation at The Cottage page covers race weekends, journey times and why a quiet countryside base works better than staying beside the circuit.

Luminate Light Trail at Coombe Abbey, Coventry

The west wing of Coombe Abbey across the moat and topiary garden in winter

Luminate at Coombe Abbey Park is one of the longest Christmas light trails near Market Harborough, a 2.4 kilometre route through enchanted woodland and historic parkland that takes between 60 and 90 minutes to walk. It runs from Saturday 28 November 2026 to Saturday 2 January 2027, with timed entry between 4.30pm and 8.30pm, at Coombe Abbey Park on Brinklow Road, Binley, Coventry, postcode CV3 2AB. The drive from Clipston is about 40 minutes via the A14 and M6, making it an easy evening out without an early start.

The trail is built around around a dozen large-scale moments, with interactive installations, fire pits and festoon-lit paths, plus a food village and the Kiosk in the Park for hot drinks and snacks. Marshmallows can be bought on site for toasting. The route includes flashing lights, lasers and haze effects, and some sections may not suit visitors with balance disorders, so it is worth reading the accessibility notes before booking if that applies to either of you.

For couples, a Monday to Thursday slot offers the best value and the calmest atmosphere, at £17.75 per adult. The most popular Saturday slots in December sell out early, so book as soon as your dates at The Cottage are fixed. Coombe Abbey itself is a striking moated house, and arriving before dusk gives you time to see the gardens in daylight before the lights come on.

Warwick Castle Christmas Light Trail 2026

Warwick Castle seen from Castle Bridge above the River Avon

The Warwick Castle Christmas light trail, Follow the Glow, Find the Fairies, runs from 21 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, with more than half a million lights spread across the castle’s 64 acres of grounds. Light trail time slots start from 4.30pm, the walk takes about 45 minutes, and you are welcome to go round again if capacity allows. Warwick is about 55 minutes from The Cottage, the furthest of the main trails in this list, but the medieval castle lit up above the River Avon is one of the most dramatic Christmas settings in the Midlands.

Tickets for the light trail alone start from £17, or from £27 for a combined castle and light trail ticket, which lets you spend the afternoon exploring the castle before the trail opens. An open-air ice rink on the East Front offers 45-minute skating sessions from £8, and the Winter Food and Drink Village serves mulled wine, hot chocolate and toasted marshmallows. Payment on site is by card only, and picnics are not permitted on the trail.

Evening parking is charged at the Stables and Stratford Road car parks and can be bought in advance through the castle app; allow an extra 15 to 20 minutes to walk in from Stratford Road. The route includes some steep slopes, grassy areas and darker sections, so comfortable boots are a good idea. For a festive afternoon before the trail, the Conservatory Tea House serves a Christmas afternoon tea during the day.

Twycross Zoo Light Trail: Lanterns of the Wild

A light-up reindeer among rocks and uplit conifers on a Christmas light trail at night

The Twycross Zoo light trail, Lanterns of the Wild, has the longest season of any Christmas light trail near Market Harborough, running on selected evenings from 6 November 2026 to 21 February 2027. The 1.5 kilometre route takes between 60 and 90 minutes and passes through ten illuminated zones, from an Underwater Odyssey to a Lost World of South America, with Gruffalo Woods returning and Stick Man new for this season. The trail opens at 4.30pm, last entry is usually 7.30pm, and the zoo is about 50 minutes from Clipston on the A5 and M69.

Adult tickets start from £19 and children from £13.75, with combined day and lantern tickets from £32 per adult for those who want to see the animals in daylight first. Advance booking is strongly recommended, as entry on the day is not guaranteed, and parking costs £4 per vehicle. The route is step-free and suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs, there are accessible toilets, and there are no strobes or lasers, which makes Twycross the most relaxed trail on this list for anyone sensitive to flashing lights.

The lantern trail is aimed at families, so for couples the quieter midweek evenings in January and February are the most atmospheric time to go, long after the Christmas rush. The View, the zoo’s on-site restaurant, serves a sit-down dinner, which removes the need to find somewhere to eat afterwards. Because the season runs until late February, a Twycross evening also works well for a Valentine’s break at The Cottage.

Wollaton Winter Light Trail in Nottingham

Wollaton Hall in Nottingham floodlit in gold against a deep blue twilight sky

The Wollaton Winter Light Trail returns to Wollaton Hall and Deer Park in Nottingham from Wednesday 25 November 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027, with a new trail, new displays, a soundscape and interactive installations. Wollaton Hall, an Elizabethan mansion set in a historic deer park at postcode NG8 2AE, makes a spectacular backdrop when it is floodlit after dark. The drive from The Cottage is about an hour via the M1, which makes it the furthest walking trail in this list, but an easy combination with a day at Nottingham’s Christmas market.

It is run by the same organiser as the Delapré Abbey trail, so the evening follows a similar pattern: marshmallow toasting, independent food vendors, mulled wine, beer and hot chocolate, plus private mini chalets for groups. There is also a funfair for younger visitors. Entry is by timed slot through the organiser’s ticketing site, and 2026 prices are due with the full ticket release, so check the booking calendar before you travel.

If you plan to visit both Nottingham and Northampton trails, choose one; the two share an organiser and a style, so a better pairing is Wollaton with Coombe Abbey or Warwick Castle for contrast. For a full Nottingham day, spend the afternoon at the Winter Wonderland in the Old Market Square, take an early evening slot at Wollaton, and drive back to Clipston for a late, quiet supper.

Christmas Date Ideas Near Market Harborough Beyond the Light Trails

The front of Belvoir Castle with its central tower above the gravel courtyard

Not every festive evening needs a light trail. Belvoir Castle, about an hour from The Cottage near Grantham, does not run an outdoor trail in 2026, but its Castle by Candlelight evenings are one of the best Christmas date ideas in the region. They are for adults only and run every Thursday in December from 6pm to 8.30pm, at £40 per person, with live musicians, a glass of bubbles and a mince pie as you walk the candlelit state rooms. During the day, Deck the Halls fills the castle with carol-themed decorations from 14 November to 30 December 2026.

Closer to home, Market Harborough switches on its Christmas lights on Saturday 21 November 2026, with lights on at 7pm and stalls on the Square from 6pm to 9pm, followed by an Artisan Fair on Saturday 28 November from 9am to 4pm. Both are ten minutes from The Cottage and make an easy first evening of a December stay. Christmas at Belton near Grantham also returns with a brand new light trail for 2026, a longer drive at around 70 minutes but a beautiful National Trust setting.

Date Night Tip From Susan

Book a 5pm light trail slot and reserve dinner for 7.30pm on the way home. You avoid the busiest entry times, get the lights at their best just after dusk, and are back at the cottage in time for a long bath before bed.

For Christmas itself, our romantic Christmas breaks for two cover how to spend Christmas Eve and Christmas Day at The Cottage, from local butchers and farm shops to the walks around Clipston. And for couples staying into the New Year, the New Year’s Eve breaks for couples at the cottage pair perfectly with the trails that stay open until 3 January.

Planning a Christmas Light Trail Date Night from Clipston

A little planning turns a Christmas light trail into a relaxed evening rather than a rush. Book trail tickets first, choose the restaurant second, and keep the drive home short. The Cottage is well placed for all six trails, with the A14, A508 and M1 close by, so most evenings involve less than an hour in the car each way.

How To Plan A Light Trail Evening From The Cottage

  • Step 1: Choose your trail and book a timed slot online as soon as your stay is confirmed
  • Step 2: Pick a 4.30pm to 5.30pm slot to see the lights just after dusk with smaller crowds
  • Step 3: Book dinner near the trail or on the way back to Clipston for around 7.30pm
  • Step 4: Wear waterproof boots and warm layers, as most trails cross grass and woodland paths
  • Step 5: Pre-pay parking where the venue allows it, especially at Warwick Castle
  • Step 6: Head back to The Cottage, where underfloor heating and a roll-top bath are waiting

December weather in the Midlands is usually cold and often damp, so a warm coat, gloves and a hat make a real difference on a 90-minute walk. Most trails are cashless, and many allow you to buy marshmallows on site for the fire pits. If either of you is sensitive to flashing lights, Twycross Zoo has no strobes or lasers, while Coombe Abbey and Warwick Castle both include lighting effects that are worth checking in advance.
